Full mouth rehabilitation with 6 dental implants and fixed denture ©

Is it possible to completely restore a mouth using six dental implants and a fixed prosthesis?

First, it is necessary to carry out an examination and diagnosis: a mouth examination, clinical history, X-rays, models of the mouth and other complementary tests that the dentist requires based on each patient’s needs.

Once the case is selected, there are two phases to the treatment. The Surgical Phase is followed by the Prosthetic Phase. Specialists and dentists are trained in this technique and can perform both phases. It is not necessary to perform any preparatory work if the patient doesn’t have any teeth. However, if the patient has poor teeth or needs to be removed, it will be necessary for the gum to heal before fitting the implants. This can take up to 3 months. Today, we are able to solve many cases quickly by removing teeth and fitting dental implants. The fixed teeth can be placed within a matter of hours (see dental implant and same-day teeth).

Two steps make up the surgical phase.

• First step: Placement of the dental implants. The dental implants are placed into the bone using a precise technique. The procedure takes between one and two hours. It is usually done using local anesthetic. Most patients do not feel any discomfort during or after the procedure. In the case of jaws with no teeth, there are usually between 4-6 dental implants. This is because it is not necessary for one tooth to be fitted.
Sometimes the posterior area is affected by the pneumatization of maxillary sinuses. In this case, implants cannot be placed without first grafting in order to increase height. Implants can be placed once the sinus lift has been completed.

• Second step: “connecting the healing abutment”. This second step takes place after a healing period that can last between 3 and 4 months depending on whether the implants were placed in the lower or the upper jaws. This is necessary for osseointegration, which occurs when the implant becomes permanently attached to bone. A small operation is performed to attach the sections, called abutments, to the dental implant. These are used in the later stages to attach the prosthesis. A temporary bridge or denture can be used during the osseointegration stage, but this is primarily for aesthetic reasons. This second step is no longer necessary as the dental implant has been fixed in place and the healing attachment is attached during the same procedure.

• Third step: prosthetic phase
The Prosthetic Phase begins once the gum has healed from surgery. This usually takes less than fifteen days. The Prosthetic Phase begins with a series of impressions of your mouth. Next, you will need to visit the dentist for an evaluation of the function, appearance, and adjustment of the new teeth. It is important to plan all stages in advance.
The prosthesis will need to be maintained in the same manner as natural teeth.
