Is it common for dental offices to cancel appointments if patient doesn’t confirm the appointment?

A cleaning was scheduled back in April. First available appointment was on July 18, which is this Monday. I received one call this Thursday, with a message asking for confirmation and another call on Friday with an announcement that my appointment had been cancelled. Unfortunately I work 6am-4pm in a lab and don’t have much time to eat, let alone answer phone calls during my shift. I did not check my voicemail today, so it is a shame. I did not receive an email regarding this. They gave me 24 hour notice to cancel.
