Can implants fail? What is a periimplantitis, and how can it happen?
3d video of Clínica Médico Dental Pardiñas ( on peri-implantitis, an inflammatory process that affects the tissues surrounding a dental implant and that can lead to its loss.
Implants are not as susceptible to cavities as regular teeth. However, they need proper maintenance because of the possibility of gingival inflammation, bone loss, and infection. It is known as periodontal disease if it occurs around natural teeth. However, periimplantitis is when it affects implants.
Plaque and tartar buildup around the implant’s surface is the most common cause of periimplantitis. This causes inflammation of the implants and bone resorption. Another reason could be a bad implant placement or an incorrect bite.
Tobacco use and lack of oral hygiene can be risk factors. It is crucial to take care of your dental implants and ensure their good health.
Your dentist will explain how to maintain your implants healthy and clean. A proper routine for brushing and flossing is essential. Your dentist and dental hygienist may also be able to teach you about other tools that can help maintain your teeth, implants, and gum health, including interdental brushes or irrigators.
How to treat periimplantitis
Peri-implantitis can often be caused by poor dental hygiene. The best treatment is to remove affected tissue and to decontaminate the implant.
The implant’s surface can be cleaned and filled with biomaterials if it is possible. The area will be sutured if bone filling cannot be done. However, this will expose a part of the implant to the oral environment and will require special hygienic measures.
Peri-implantitis progresses in more serious cases. These cases require the removal of the implant and the placement of a new one if it is possible.
Implants require regular maintenance, just like natural teeth. It is important to visit your dentist at minimum twice per year. We perform this procedure at our dental clinic because dental implants are one our main specialties.
