One question which is in everyone’s mind who have maligned teeth are, “What is the Ideal Age to Get Braces?” or “What is the ideal age to start Orthodontic Treatment??”.
If the answer is to what are the ideal conditions in the body for starting Orthodontic treatments, it would be from ages 10-14 YearsThis is also known by the Mixed Dentition Phase. This is where you will find the permanent teeth and the deciduous teeth. This is also when we can clearly see Malocclusion.
Many people are unsure whether braces can be obtained before or after the Ideal Age of Malocclusion. You can begin your Orthodontic treatment at any age, from 18 to 60 years old if you have the funds. Spacing for older patients over 50 years has been a success. Because of the multiple factors that affect bone remodeling and movement, it takes longer to treat older patients.
Why is it that 12-14 years old is considered the best age to begin orthodontic treatment?
It is considered as idea age as most of the Permanent teeth have erupted into the oral cavity – Canines and Second Molars which for the anchor points for the Anterior and Posterior teeth respectively. This is a good indication of Malocclusion. Another aspect is Bone development. This isn’t complete and will make it easier to move the teeth and give the Bone time.
What is the ideal age for your child’s first Orthodontic Evaluation?
The ideal time for the Orthodontic Evaluation for your Child is between the ages of 6 to 8 years, this the period when the Permanent Upper and Lower First Molars as well as the Anterior – Incisors Erupt into the Oral Cavity. You can check for Occlusion variations and differences at this time. We will mention them below.
If your Dentist after evaluation feels that we can wait and watch, there will not be any need for Treatment at that age “Patients in this age group are not eligible for braces“. If your Dentist feels that there is need to intervene, your child will be given certain appliances – Removable or Fixed depending on the Problem which will help in intercepting the development of the Malocclusion and correct it in the process. This is called as “Orthodontics with Interceptive Treatment“.
What are the problems you should be looking out for in your children aged 6-8 years?
Malocclusion is most common in children aged 6-8 years. At this age, we can begin to see the signs. Dental Malocclusion can be Hereditary. This means that a child could develop it if the father or mother has it.
- Excessive Spacing
- Open Bite
- Deep Bite or Too Much
- Cross Bite (Anterior, Front Teeth)
- Cross Bite (Posterior and Back Teeth).
- Overjet (Protrusion)
- Abnormal Eruption – Eruption of Teeth out of the Arch
These are the 9 things you should look for in your Child if you notice any of these problems. To determine the best treatment plan, consult a dentist. Although braces may not be necessary immediately, in some cases orthodontic appliances are required to help the Jaw and teeth grow into occlusion.
