“Hi all. I’m Stephy Steph and this is Bobby and together we are…BETWEEN TWO TEETH!”
This is a common intro to our not-so-common YouTube channel called “Between Two Teeth.” This channel has served a multitude of functions and continues to be a space/medium to unpack some of life’s toughest questions.
Robert G. McNeill is my co-creator, co-host, and state board member. He is an oral maxillofacial and dental surgeon. When we decided to start this channel, we weren’t really sure what this was going to be. We knew that we didn’t know what we were doing and wanted to help people connect, especially after the COVID 19 pandemic.
If you are part of our study club, you know we have a “blue couch” in the office. Over time our “blue couch” has become a symbol of a safe space to show up and talk about life before the meeting officially starts. We discuss everything from practice and kids to relationships and life’s many aspirations. There were tears, laughter and joy. But most importantly, there was a sense community. This “blue couch” environment is what motivated us to expand our reach to a broader audience through social media.
From the very start, Bob and I agreed that this wasn’t about the stats (i.e. Number of views, number likes. This was all about helping the person who really needed it. We want to make connections with our audience through honest, humorous and enjoyable discussions. We feel strongly about what an episode conveys and, at the end, these episodes are fun to make. Think “Between Two Ferns” but with teeth
I’ll leave you with a final thought on connection and our core values. Right now I’m reading “Dare to Lead” by Brene Brown, a well-known researcher and speaker on vulnerability. She speaks about living in your values. Consider two of your most significant values. I found it difficult to think about two of my most important values when I tried this challenge. I thought about how I have fallen prey to the pursuit of status and money over my core values of creativity, connection, and self-worth.
Between Two Teeth was a way for me to refocus on my core values. In private practice, I sometimes fall prey to systems, business, or self-promotion. My co-host and me have the opportunity to be creative in this medium. I hope that you enjoy the channel, our antics, and most importantly our message.
“I define connection as energy … when people feel seen, heard, and valued.” -Brené Brown, headline speaker at ADA SmileCon 2022
